“…but this tipping automatically, it’s for the birds.”

this just might be one of the greatest muppets-related things i’ve ever seen. i’m a fan of reservoir dogs, even if only because i have a crush on 5 of the 8 lead characters. thing is, the film gets kinda old after the first couple dozen watches because all the surprises are gone. this clip is exactly what i needed to fully restore my dogs love — kermit and the gang from muppets take manhattan (one of my favorite muppets movies) re-enacting the infamous tipping scene from reservoir dogs (which features some of my favorite dialogue from any movie ever). by the way, if you don’t own the reservoir dogs soundtrack, what are you waiting for? get on it! who knew “stuck in the middle with you” complemented cop torture so well?

our gang in “spooky hooky”

i know i’m a little late on the halloween front, but here’s one of my favorite shorts by one of my favorite filmmakers featuring some of my favorite child actors. it’s hal roach presents: our gang in spooky hooky (1936), directed by gordon douglas, who eventually went on to bless the world with them! (1954) and robin and the 7 hoods (1964). enjoy!

happy birthday, jim henson.

“when i was young, my ambition was to be one of the people who made a difference in this world. my hope is to leave the world a little better for having been there.” – jim henson

puppeteer, director, artist, and creator of freaky, long-haired, dirty, cynical muppets and oh-so-subtle pitches, jim henson was born 74 years ago today. there are very, very few people i’m willing to call a true inspiration and “idol,” much less a genius, and jim henson deserves all three titles. he was the brains behind a good chunk of what was good in my (and i doubt i’d be wrong if i said your) childhood — sesame street, labyrinth, muppet babies (my fav), fraggle rock, bear in the big blue house (ok ok, so bitbbh came after his death, but still), the muppet show, the dark crystal, and on and on. i often curse my vivid imagination. it’s the reason i’m deathly afraid of the dark, after all. but i’m sure i would be a lot less creative, imaginative, inventive, and overall awesome had there never been a jim henson to encourage the power of creating objects and ideas and possibilities in my own mind.

“muppet babies, we make our dreams come trueee
muppet babies, we’ll do the same for youuu
when your room looks kinda weird and you wish that you weren’t they-ur
just close your eyes and make believe, and you can be anywhereee.”

-excerpt from muppet babies theme song

the children (and adults) of yesteryear miss you, jim. and the children of today and tomorrow have no idea what they’ve missed. lord help them!

image via the joy boys – jim kinda resembles a dark-haired shaun white

and while i’m at it, happy belated birthday to ethan coen, the youngest half of my favorite directing duo! i love you, ethan! one day i will be your protégé and we will take cannes by storm!

two geeks, one helmet

i admit, i’m no true-blue star wars geek. i hadn’t seen the original trilogy until this year and honestly, hayden christensen was the sole reason my 13 and 16-year-old selves went to see 2/3 of the prequel trilogy on their opening days.

but despite my lack of knowledge of random quotes, character histories and the star wars universe in general, for a long while i’ve had a thing for the imperial stormtroopers. what’s funny is that i’m normally drawn to uniqueness and individuality, yet i find an army of soulless, impersonal, mechanical soldiers positively sexy (lando and either one of the fetts can get it, too, though). i’m so not the damsel in distress type, but i’ve had dreams involving my prince stormtrooper rescuing me from potentially life-threatening situations, like a white knight in sterile, shining space armor. maybe i’m attracted to the anonymity and the mystery. their oxymoronic menacing innocence. or it could simply be that their badass uniforms turn me on. the clean lines and rigidity. the permanent scowl on the faces of their helmets. they’re stark white, save for a few accents, and still manage to come across as threatening (even if they can’t aim for shit). gotta love a man in uniform.

…but only if his uniform looks like it was designed by gareth pugh.

anyway! yesterday as i was browsing tumblr, i stumbled upon redandjonny — a tumblr dedicated to a guy and gal who take pictures of themselves in various situations wearing stormtrooper helmets!
